What is Via Equestre Toscana

Via Equestre Toscana is an association created to offer all horse-riding lovers their ideal vacation in the Maremma and in Tuscany. Its website caters to all the travellers who wish to explore Tuscany by travelling on horseback through bridle-paths in its world-famous countryside.

Originally created to promote the close network of trails, white roads and ancient cattle tracks that run throughout the Maremma near Grosseto, Via Equestre is now a rich database of country paths and tracks throughout Tuscany. All those who are looking for a real ecological holiday – and riding holidays are certainly the most rewarding green vacation – will find on this website information on the most beautiful and authentic areas in Tuscany and tips to explore them on horseback: from the Mugello area to the surroundings of Lucca, from the Casentino to the Siena region and of course the Maremma. And many more are the areas that can be discovered on horseback: the Apuan Alps, the hills of the Argentario Peninsula covered in thick Mediterranean maquis, the sandy beach of the Thyrennean coast, the pine tree forests along the shoreline and the woods on Mount Amiata and in the Maremma Nature Park (Parco dell’Uccellina).

Via Equestre Grossetana e Toscana aims at promoting an ancient and ecological way to enjoy landscapes of incredible beauty, where one can still see wild animals in their natural environment, such as wild boar, roe-deer and porcupines.

The itineraries and the trekking ideas presented on the Via Equestre Grossetana and Toscana website are offered by member equestrian centres and agriturismos or holiday farms. The members of the association can meet the needs of the most diverse clientele: panoramic rides, rides in areas of great artistic and historical value, theme rides, relaxing or adventure horseback holidays in the Tuscan countryside which will make their guests discover the local traditions which make every corner of the region a unique experience.

Near Grosseto, all lovers of horseback riding cannot but be fascinated by the amazing world of Butteri Maremmani, also know as the cowboys of the Maremma, with their traditional outfit and their riding style while they graze the herds of Maremman Oxen moving slowly in the plains and in the yellow sunflower fields.

Among the many itineraries proposed by the Via Equestre Grossetana e Toscana, the Etruscan trails are worth of a special mention. Riders can go along the ancient Etruscan roads through oak woods to old medieval villages and forgotten necropolis.

Escorted tours of varying length are also available: from short half-day rides to real horseback riding tours of a week or more. A professional guide and authorised Fitetrec-Ante/G.A.E. Regione Toscana guides accompany riders throughout the tour.

How is the Via Equestre Toscana organized and what are its aims?

The website of Via Equestre Toscana gathers the addresses and contact details of numerous Equitourism Centres, Holiday Farms equipped for horseback holidays, and riding-schools and provides exhaustive information on trails and itineraries as well as selected accommodation in Maremma and in the rest of Tuscany. All the structures have trained professional guides and guests and their horses are accommodated in beautiful countryside homes which offer all the best of the world-famous warm Italian hospitality.

The organization of escorted horseback trekking is our strength. Our clients can relax with their horses. After an abundant Tuscan breakfast, the activities start.

All the members of the association Via Equestre Grossetana e Toscana work to promote the traditions and the products of this ancient land. On their tables you will find bruschetta, crostini, extra virgin olive oil, excellent wines (many are the DOC and DOCG wines in Tuscany), cheese, wildboar salami, the mushrooms of Monte Amiata, prosciutto, and many other local gourmet products of Tuscany. Staying at our associated holiday farms, you will have the opportunity to try some extremely popular wines (Chianti, Brunello, Morellino di Scansano) and some wine which have just started to grow in popularity among the connosseurs (Bianco di Pitigliano, Montecucco, Monteregio di Massa Marittima, Capalbio, etc.).

Our history...

Via Equestre Toscana was created in the year 2000 in Grosseto with the intent of promoting horseback-riding tourism in Maremma. Over the years, more and more structures and service providers outside the Maremma region have applied to join the association.

For this reason, we have decided to open up to the structures of a wider territory and to share our passion for horses and horseback tourism with the farms, manèges, and equestrian centres of the rest of Tuscany.

In 2007, the association website underwent a radical redesign to ensure a wider visibility to equitourism and ecotourism in Tuscany. We hope to be able to accommodate even more farms, hotels, agriturismi, and tours on the pages of our portal in order to make more people aware of the immense value of alternative tourism. In 2006 the portal had over 300.000 unique visitors with 1.550.000 visits.

We hope that our association will keep growing and that it will gain in visibility and popularity year after year, so that the values which we try to foster can also spread among travellers. We hope that Via Equestre Grossetana e Toscana will make travellers aware that visiting other countries respecting nature and traditions is indeed possible and rewarding.
